For those that are confused by the front page post, I have a little arithmetic that may help alleviate some of the confusion:
Let’s assume for a minute that the abiotic oil theory is correct, and that the Earth continuously regenerates “fossil” fuels.
The very next question that emerges after accepting that theory is “How much does the earth produce each day?”
Let’s assume now for argument’s sake that the Earth produces exactly what we use each day, which is currently hovering around 87 million barrels.
If those two assumtions are true then life is truly grand and we have no energy worries!
Now for the lesson in Arithmetic:
There are 7.48 gallons per cubic foot, and 44 gallons of oil per barrel, therefore each barrel of oil is about 5.88 cubic feet of volume.
Since we use 87,000,000 barrels per day, you can multiply that by 5.88 cubic feet per barrel and we find that we consume 511,729,131.13 cubic feet per day.
On an annual basis that becomes 186,781,132,862.42 cubic feet, which is a number so big I will convert it to cubic miles.
One cubic mile is 147,197,952,000.00 cubic feet, which means we burn about 1.2 cubic miles of oil per year.
Store that number for a moment while we estimate the volume of the Earth’s crust:
The total volume of the Earth is approximately 260,732,699,457.00 cubic miles. The numbers are starting to get big again!
Since the Earth’s crust is about 1% of the total volume, that means it’s about 2.6 Billion cubic miles!
If the Earth is four billion years old, and let’s say it has been producing oil for only the second two billion years, then the entire Earth’s crust would be oil today!
Since it isn’t, it should be obvious that even if hydrocarbons seep up from the mantle continuously, it happens at a rate thousands of times slower than we use it.
Abiotic oil?
Sure! Who cares?
Once that “confusion” is settled the conspiracy theorist's argument falls apart.
have a nice day!
