Stories from the lunatic fringe

Unread postby Rod_Cloutier » Sun 09 Dec 2012, 14:24:54

I web surf a lot of message boards, and news sites and I try to obtain at least some 'real' news each day. On the way I often encounter the 'lunatic fringe', where hard headed skepticism meets the unexpected. I thought we should have a thread here devoted to the news stories of the fringe.

This week I have encountered the weird, but growing in popularity concept of sinkholes, earthquakes, and gas explosions. These occurrences are being attributed to fracking operations which accentuate natural occurring Earthquakes, and accentuate naturally occurring subsidence leading to larger sinkholes.

While neither earthquakes nor subsidence are new, it has been suggested by the lunatic fringe that there is a 'plot' or a 'conspiracy' brewing to accentuate these events for some nefarious plan.

I'm highly skeptical of any of these claims. Most likely oil and natural gas operations are creating more problems as the easy oil is depleted, and we have to go after the more difficult reserves, in more problematic areas. The 'plot' is merely a symptom of EROEI decline being realized, and in my opinion nothing more.

Still we have the lunatic fringe...

Twenty six thousand people have petitioned the White House to build a Death star in space:

The online petition submitted to the White House website asks the Obama administration to secure resources and funding for the construction of a Death Star by 2016.

Over 26,000 signatures were recorded on the "We the people" section of the White House website, forcing government officials to give a response.

In February, students from Lehigh University of Pennsylvania calculated that, it would cost $852 quadrillion, or 13,000 times the world’s gross domestic product to build a Death Star.

The students estimated that to build a 140 km diameter ship at current production rates, it would take 833,315 years to mine the required amount of steel to begin work on such a weapo

How would you rank this on a 1 to 10 nuttiness scale among the other petitions:
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions

(or just the ones that got over 25000)?

You can create your own:

They even have links to Twitter and Facebook on this govt website. We should demand a link to PO.com (how much $ does PO.com contribute to Obama?) .
Facebook knows you're a dog.

The 'Deport all people who signed the petition to succeed from the Union'. Grabbed my attention- deport them where? Who would want them?

Alas, as a Canadian I cannot create a new petition.
