A Melbourne couple has completed their 366th marathon in as many days, bringing an end to a 15,000-kilometre journey around Australia.

Janette Murray-Wakelin and Alan Murray travelled 44 kilometres down the Yarra Trail today to their home at Warrandyte.

A typical day on the road

Up at 4:00am
10 bananas, a grapefruit, and a date smoothie each for breakfast
8:00am: Make room for another 10 bananas each
9:00am: Large green smoothies to help wash the bananas down
At 30km, stop for a fruit salad
Three oranges each at the 37km mark
Finish marathon around 4:00pm
Vegie juice, avocado and a huge vegetable salad for dinner.

Ultramarathons are a rare sport in that they prove that youth's physical prime is sometimes at least, thoroughly outdone by the stamina of the mature. This couple have broken the world record today for the most consecutive days of running a Marathon or more- roughly 26 miles/ 42 km. Many of theses days they ran much further. Ultramarathons are dominated by athletes beyond their mid forties, with many personally peaking in their 60's. The phenomena has been studied with most concluding that the mental toughness required to keep going beyond pain thresholds is the factor missing in younger athletes who otherwise theoretically should blitz in such events.

To me this couple's quite amazing feat of endurance, is a rare positive and beautiful story. With many of us here approaching or in our 'golden years', to see contemporaries and elders going out to prove a point like this and doing it- inspiring.

I was on a similar diet for over a decade and usually jogged a quarter walked a quarter every day and rarely needed more than 6 hours sleep. This was in my 20's and 30's. In my entering late 40's now, I am in a stage of reviewing all kinds of aspects of my earlier years and formulating modes for the next 20 years- these people are a wake up call- the lady was supposed to die of cancer 10 years ago.

Good for them, it is nice to know that some humans do well on a high carb diet.

Not doing enough and eating too much- of whatever the 2 prime causes of disease in the sedentary lifestyle. Lets see if this example of the opposite will eve be replicated on a non vegan or a more grain oriented diet.

The one thing disappoints me about this story is the use of back up vehicles. Hundreds of people cycle around Australia every year using just what they can carry between towns and water stops.

As long as one is very active, most can eat almost any macro structure diet and do fine, as long as the calories are sufficient but not excessive.

I couldn't eat 10 bananas in a day if I tried. hard.
qed... banana diet not in my future. I do like a banana though.

If you are not active, be very careful with the hype of any style diet. VERIFY the effect of whatever you're eating. Its too cheap not to.
Yes we are, as we are,
And so shall we remain,
Until the end.

I find almonds a lot easier to eat and they are a lot more calorie dense than bananas. I think it's pretty well established that animal proteins are not just slower to digest, but require more energy to do so. Also there are thousands of stories about people either curing- going into remission of cancer or maintaining remission for many years on a vegan or similar diet, the same can't be said for anything resembling the western food industry promoted poly diets.

SeaGypsy, here is a Podcast of my favorite online advice source when it comes to these sorts of things. Give it a listen and tell me what you think.
