Hate to disappoint all the nutty right-wingers, survivalists and libertarians out there, but historically, nationwide viral epidemics tend to begin their outbreaks in Texas or the deep South, then they run rampant through the Midwest. Sure, they affect the cities of the Northeast too, but usually, the places least affected (if there are any) are liberal strongholds like California and Washington DC. There are some red states that avoid the plague - Montana and West Virginia tend to be less affected, but in general, plagues don't care if you're liberal or conservative. Why? Because folks in rural areas are just as reliant on up-close human interaction as those in the city - if not more so.
http://gis.cdc.gov/grasp/fluview/main.htmlSure, a zombie apocalypse is different than an airborne virus, but I tend to think the gun nuts will be first to go, since they'll be the ones making the most noise and attracting the zombies, and ammo does tend to run out. The limp-wristed liberals will tend to last longer because in a zombie apocalypse, they won't think all their birthdays have come at once, so they'll be hiding in their local supermarket rather than running around pretending they're Rambo.
