Just watched a fascinating lecture on Seasonal Insulin Resistance. Eating foods high in Fructose/Sugar or a very high carbohydrate diet causes Leptin resistance. Without brain response to Leptin you become lethargic and store food energy as fat.
Before modern food storage came along the time of the year you ate a lot of Fructose was when the fruit harvest came in, and the only time you got a lot of carbohydrate was in the fall during harvest and feast days. As a result most of your ancestors put weight on in late summer and fall. On the other hand they steadily lost weight all winter and by spring when everything started growing again when leafy greens became available again their bodies were back to a normal weight.
Unfortunately since the 1970's our food system has been encouraging ever higher levels of Fructose and Carbohydrate intake. This causes leptin resistance which causes lack of energy and weight gain.
Edit because I forgot the link to the video lecture duh!
