Winter Whiners

Unread postby Tanada » Wed 26 Nov 2014, 13:12:37

I get in my griping about winter just like most people, but George Takei put up a photo essay that makes today seem all warm and fuzzy here LOL.

http://www.earthporm.com/welcome-coldes ... ans-earth/

Where is the coldest place on earth where humans actually live? Oymyakon, Russia takes the ice cube for coldest inhabited location on earth. Somehow the people that call this small, rural town home are able to survive throughout some truly brutal winters.

The subarctic climate found in this region is extreme, as of right now in November temperatures hoover around -38F.

Journalist and photographer Amos Chapple braved the cold long enough to take these stunning pictures of Omyakon after the winter freeze set in, letting us all catch a glimpse of life in one of the coldest places on earth.
Alfred Tennyson wrote:We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Wow, thanks for sharing those pics, Tanada. I don't think I could live there; I love the outdoors too much. Also, that seems like the kind of place where a person would really have to be self-sufficient as far as filling the hours of a day; I guess I'm spoiled, living in a bustling city but also being able to enjoy a beautiful river valley and lots of parks and trails and lakes nearby, with variable seasons to do so. Did you read the comment section below the article? Everyone's talking about the dog! My dog loves the winter, as she comes from way up in northern Alberta and has some husky in her, but I think that northern Russian climate would be too much for her!

Well, I'm tired of winter, have been for six weeks already. Can't wait for it to be over.

Are you sure this isn't Frostbite Falls Minnesota where Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle lived?

I always used to laugh at the fuss made over having a "white Christmas" having never seen a green one. Trick- or- treating is sometimes done in snow suits. A four year old girl does not like having her Princess costume all squished into a snow suit. :) This years Thanksgiving weather is normal as you can see here.
Happy turkey day everyone. No fighting with the relatives allowed!!

Putting up quite a bit of field fence this week. Love working outside with no bugs. Spring is awesome but I'll get so tired of ticks.
