End of Oil--The Rise of the Scythe

I found this video pretty interesting...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVv597m848s

It shows a 14 year old girl using a scythe to mow the grass. It also shows how the future of agriculture is going to be like. We are going back to handtools and animal power in the future when oil runs out.

Without fossil fuels, like oil and natural gas, most of the population will have to become farmers again in order to feed the entire population. There is no way only 2% of the population is farmers to support the rest of the population when oil is gone. The only reason 2% of the population can support the rest of the population with food is because of fossil fuels.

So you better start using a horse/oxen and handtools on your farm in the near future for growing food. You have no other choice because tractors and combines don't work without oil.

Anyways that is all I have to say. I have to go to class soon.

You mean the grim reaper?
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.

pstarr wrote:Just a dreamy permacultural fantasy. Your food will continue to come from giant mechanized industrial-sized chemical farms. Thatis because you have neither the land, expertise, nor tools to feed yourself. If you dare attempt to take that farm land, you will be crushed and returned forthwith to your remnant consumer ghetto to play lazily on your Iputz.

Then, how are we going to survive peak oil?

I think you are both correct in a way. To find the future of Ag. after peak oil go back to the 1940's.
if you think it will not be motorised, you are wrong, simply checkout the Amish.
Horses provide the power, that will be the only difference.

Not a permaculture wet dream at all.
We will go kicking and screaming down the path to the new Middle Ages as fossil fuels desert us. With the decline of available energy, those of most of us who have sat at the top of the energy pyramid will become the new peasants. With the popular view of the Middle Ages as a brutal and dirty time filled with famine and disease and at the mercy of armed overlords. We cringe at the thought.

With great sadness, we must recognize the direct connection between present day population levels and the use of fossil fuels in food production, medical procedures, medicines and hygiene. With the fall in fossil fuel availability there will be a reduction in population. Population soared with the industrial revolution and the development of industrial, fossil fuel based agriculture. It cannot be sustained.
