Is this site run by ad revenue?

Unread postby DesuMaiden » Fri 10 Apr 2015, 21:20:28

I noticed there are a lot of advertisements on this site. So I was wondering if this site is supported by advertising revenue. I think most sites on the Internet run on ad revenue. Youtube runs on ad revenue. MySpace runs on ad revenue. And Facebook definitely runs on ad revenue. Does this site pay its monthly bills via ad revenue? I doubt this site can support itself on donations alone.
History repeats itself. Just everytime with different characters and players.

If you are offering to donate cash I am sure the owners would be happy to talk to you about it.

A lot of it runs on idiot posts. Especially one particular idiot. Work out who that is & ask them for some $$$.

This site is brought to you as a public service by your National Security Administration and the Total Information Awareness program.

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

I could use an ad-blocker, but I find it a bit interesting to see how Big Brother is tracking my browsing. For example, I posted on the Haber process thread yesterday and this morning I get an ad for
http://globalnitrogenservices.com/

Sometimes it's a mystery, what I browsed that triggered the targeted ads.
Facebook knows you're a dog.

Your browser stores "cookies" little tags that ad servers look at to decide what ad to send to you, to avoid them, just clear your browsing history frequently or always use the private (porn ;) ) function.

Let's suppose it is (like most sites which don't directly sell lots of stuff like, say, Amazon).

SO WHAT? As long as the mods are (as far as I can tell) reasonable and unbiased, and the conversation flows to let us share information about related (and for members, unrelated) topics -- what is the harm?

Far as I can tell, it's not like they try to deny that there are ads. Are we better off or worse off with such sites? (I'd say an unqualified "better")

To me, until someone MAKES you join, or they directly lie about the ad revenue -- no harm, no foul. My only concern is if the internet ends up (like TV, IMO) letting ads dominate and RUIN THE EXPERIENCE for the users. Only time will tell, on that. (And no, I don't watch live television, due to the ads).
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

On my own PC I use an ad blocker, but I can tolerate static & passive ads.
They cross the line when they demand to be viewed before letting you see the content.

The site loses a browser, I don't go there again!
