.
they are now commemorating the 40th anniversary of the US skedaddle out of Vietnam
as far as Ttl fck up is concerned the US military high command gave the world one of the greatest lesson ever

-the CIA ran so fast they forgot to destroy the files of their informers which fell into the grateful hands of the North Vietnamese political police ( I work with an ex-captain of the South Army ,he spent seven years in a camp , being explained the errors of his ways )
the total SNAFU was broad based , while the last Helicopter left the roof of the embassy as the sun set , the Ships offshore received this signal
"when do you get us out ? "..."who are you "..."the Marines detail on guard "..."Oups you will have to wait until morning"
which they did ,while a crowd of NV soldiers were milling about the grounds below ,
they got out with no problem beside RPGs and guns being fired at them .
a perfect epitomy of the whole war

.
Since this doesn't to sink home , some facts
the US Army got a draw in Korea , lost in Vietnam , Iraq , Afghanistan
won against the power of Grenada and won in Panama city
I would , considering the cost ,estimate this is a pretty lousy return on investment
or maybe trim the rhetoric to middling central America states level , no more

If any trouble happens, big or small, we've got a military full of good Southern commanders that can handle it.

Texan Ben Hodges in Europe. A Japanese-American Southerner from Tennessee, in charge of the navy in the pacific.

They are not warmongers, but they are not John Kerry either -- they see it like it is, they tell it like it is, they don't take any crap and they get the job done.

And we've got the best soldiers in the world and in the history of the world, too, and they shouldn't let any noam chomskies make them make them feel bad. They have defended this country and made the world free, and kept it free, for our entire lives and our parents' and grandparents' lives.

War is a horror, that is definitely true, and short dictators with mustaches or "napoleon complexes" ought to remember that and not roll across borders in the first place.

Russia and China just need to not push it too far, that's all. Japan WILL defend itself, South Korea WILL defend itself, eastern Europe and Scandinavia and Germany WILL defend itself -- and we are all allied together.

Ben Hodges in Latvia:

(and by the way, if anyone thinks I'm off the green party reservation again, I'd just say I've never heard Bernie Sanders sounding anti-american and he's actually not a noam chomsky, I'd say he's really just a bit to the left of Clinton on serious defense matters. ISIL, etc.

He's certainly no friend of China.

Anyhow -- I realize I must be confusing to people, but look Swedes are socialist "social democrats" yet they are freaked out by Russian bombers over their borders and Russian submarines in their harbors. Scandinavia is mobilizing and preparing paramilitaries, same as all of east europe is.

Being a "social democrat" does not mean one wants to see a dictator roll his army over your land telling you he's there to "protect ethnic Russians."

I'm not sure what Putin's excuse is with Sweden, I don't think Sweden even has any Russian immigrants there for Putin to "protect."

Bottom line on it -- China's neighbors are concerned about china. And Russia's neighbors are concerned about Russia, even its allies belarus and Kazakstan have some concern so that should tell you something. The Belarusian president said he'll "fight anyone that comes onto the Belarus land, Putin or Obama." Well everyone knows it again't gonna be darn Obama invading Belarus, it's PUTIN everyone is worried about.

Putin just needs to stop this. No more rhinelands, no more sudetanlands, period. Crimea is enough, be happy with that, know when to stop.)

My father who was in France in 1918 at the front liked this song of the day.

THERE'S A LONG, LONG TRAIL

Nights are growing very lonely,
Days are very long;
I'm a-growing weary only
List'ning for your song.
Old remembrances are thronging
Thro' my memory
Till it seems the world is full of dreams
Just to call you back to me.

Chorus:

There's a long, long trail a-winding
Into the land of my dreams,
Where the nightingales are singing
And a white moon beams.
There's a long, long night of waiting
Until my dreams all come true;
Till the day when I'll be going down
That long, long trail with you.

All night long I hear you calling,
Calling sweet and low;
Seem to hear your footsteps falling,
Ev'ry where I go.
Tho' the road between us stretches
Many a weary mile,
I forget that you're not with me yet
When I think I see you smile.

Chorus:

There's a long, long trail a-winding
Into the land of my dreams,
Where the nightingales are singing
And a white moon beams.
There's a long, long night of waiting
Until my dreams all come true;
Till the day when I'll be going down
That long, long trail with you.

(From the 1914 sheet music)

Thanks for the links.
My fathers unit was artillery. 4.7 inch howitzers . The y were East of Verdun at a place called Rupt-en- Woevre and near St Remy.
My maternal Grandfather was also at the front but I know no details as he died of TB (and perhaps Mustard gas) before I was born.

My grandfather's squad was re-assigned to another company after his company got mauled pretty bad during the last week of fighting in the Argonne forest in WW1. Somehow or other they never tried to find this other company and basically hid out for a week until the Armistice. Not exactly heroic but it worked out for them.
