'Paddle in Seattle' Arctic oil drilling protest

Unread postby GHung » Sun 17 May 2015, 09:49:12

Hundreds of people in kayaks and small boats have staged a protest in the north-western US port city of Seattle against oil drilling in the Arctic by the Shell energy giant.

Paddle in Seattle was held by activists who said the firm's drilling would damage the environment.

It comes after the first of Shell's two massive oil rigs arrived at the port.

The firm wants to move them in the coming months to explore for oil off Alaska's northern coast.

Earlier this week, Shell won conditional approval from the US Department of Interior for oil exploration in the Arctic.....

I'm having a hard time finding anything in the photos that isn't soaked in oil. Seems like a case of putting one's mouth where their money is, but that's the nature of our overall energy dilemma.

Ghung - I assume you're referring to the motor fuel used to haul those folks to the water and the fact that those kayaks were probably made from NG. But that wasn't the goal: the point was to have a feel good party. Which I actually don't begrudge them. This will likely be the only day they'll actually feel like they're doing anything good. The wells will be drilled. Any commercial oil reserves discovered will be developed and produced. And the odds are that eventually there will be an oil spill of some magnitude. So says the vast majority of the US citizens.

But hey...a party is a party...let the good times float!

This was just a warm up. The real fight will happen when Shell tries to move the rig out of the sound.
