Can this site be considered a doomer website?

Unread postby DesuMaiden » Sun 05 Jul 2015, 13:22:03

I believe many users on this site are doomers. So maybe this website might be considered a doomer website? But not everyone on here is a doomer, so maybe this website isn't a doomer website? But this website strongly promotes a doomer worldview, so maybe this is a doomer website? I don't know. Maybe this is a doomer website. Maybe it isn't. Can anyone provide me with links to actual doomer websites, because I'm interested in browsing them?

It was far more doomery a few years back. There was a battle between the doomers, the cornucopians and the moderates (the moderates tended to just get on with practical mitigation stuff).

You may want to look at some of the older threads if you fancy a dose of doom. It would also help you to avoid creating multiple new threads on subjects that have already been done to death. You could just resurrect one of the threads on the subject.
What we think, we become.

The tone frequently leans toward doom on many of the threads, which as you say Desu, is hardly surprising given the overall negative consequences of peak oil. (By far, most posters seem to believe in peak oil, at least in the long term).

I would call it a "soft" doom site. As davep implied, many of the truly hard-core short term in-your-face doomer types seemed to have either left or calmed down.

You also may need to be a little careful about the labels.

Since I think human nature and climate change, general resource depletion, AGW, pollution, etc. likely mean VERY bad things in the next couple of centuries, you could call me a soft doomer.

OTOH, I tend to think that for the most part (and for at least the next 50 years or more) that things will tend to generally plod along with humans struggling along and planning poorly -- just as they have since the end of the dark ages -- i.e. things will continue generally as "normal". So I tend to call myself a moderate. That position hasn't changed in my 7-ish years visiting this site.

Sorry, but this is the only site I follow that would even remotely be called a "doomer" site, so I can't suggest better ones for you to visit. If you like economic doom, the much touted and almost always wrong zerohedge is a possibility.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

I think Desu you already should be aware that their are a pretty wide spectrum of views here. Some members are more doomerish then others. I think most though have a good grasp of the issues and consequently most tend to view the future with foreboding. Having said that we are not talking nonsense and being hysterical. For example nobody here that I can glean touted 2012 as the end, even though their were people who did believe this quite firmly. So I am sure their are sites out there more doomerish , I believe one is Malthusia.org

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...

...always look on the bright side
of life...
(Whistle)

Always look on the light side
of life...
(Whistle)

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle
- that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright
side of life...
(Whistle)

Come on.

Always look on the right side
of life...
(Whistle)

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain
with a bow
Forget about your sin - give the
audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance
anyhow.

So always look on the bright side
of death...
(Whistle)

a-Just before you draw your terminal breath...
(Whistle)

Life's a piece of shit, when you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true
You'll see its all a show, keep 'em laughin as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you

And...
Always look on the bright side
of life...
(Whistle)

Always look on the right side
of life...

C'mon Brian, cheer up

Always look on the bright side
of life...

Always look on the bright side
of life...

Worse things happen at sea you know.

I mean - what have you got to lose?
You know, you come from nothing
- you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing.

Always look on the right side
(I mean) of life...

what have you got to lose?
You know, you come from nothing
- you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost?

Always (Nothing.) look on the right side of life...

Nothing will come from nothing ya know what they say?
Cheer up ya old bugga c'mon give us a grin!
There ya go, see!

Always look on the right side of life...
(Cheer up ya old bugga c'mon give us a grin! At same time)

There ya go, see! [smilie=5grouphug.gif]

Soft Doom, Hard Doom- all sounds like porn. We can get more creative than this:

Crunchy Doomer- sees the world ending in drought and fire
Soylent Doomer- sees massive overpopulation, wars, cannibalism
Mad Max Doomer- sees oil crash, collapse, Armageddon
Reformist Doomer- sees the world ending for most- but the pure at heart who have eco-towns will live
Nuke Dumer- sees runaway meltowns or total megaton destruction
Viral Doomer- sees the big nasty bug evolving past antibiotics into zombie outbreak (or mass die off)

Me? I am not a doomer but if I was mine would be "original doomer" (kinda like chicken). I believe the real problem is human cussedness that is wired into our nature. We have all the technology today to live in paradise for many generations. There is no technological reason we can't all have fewer kids, be angry less, be more sharing, etc. etc. But what the hell! Lets attack each other endlessly just because we are bored and need a devil to kill.

C8, yes, indeed! Wonderful insights.

Just to add my half-pence to what you wrote, though, i am a doomer (of some nature) because i fully subscribe to what you stated as being human nature. We can live peacefully and in harmony, but we choose not to. Humanity will commit suicide.

That kind of puts a new light on our collective human intelligence, doesn't it? We can live peacefully, but we won't. Given the choice, we choose death and destruction. We can choose otherwise, but do we know how?

Modern life, in spite of all its gadgets, has produced a bored population. With no edge to life we have become dull and quite cowardly.
