A psychologically based question?

Unread postby onlooker » Fri 18 Sep 2015, 19:01:13

I am just curious about how everyone is coping emotionally with the state of the world and what seems are the dire and dismal prospects for the future? I have been curious about this for some time. I myself have an attitude derived I guess from having already lived 53 years. It is a calm acceptance , a peace if you will. It is derived from not fearing much of anything and also an acceptance of whatever life brings including the possibility of untimely death. I myself do not have children though I know others do. So this question is especially pertinent to the parents on this site. Emotional coping what is your strategy?

I don't cope with it well.

I think coping is what TPTB tell you you should do.

Most doom ever discussed on the internet simply doesn't happen and won't happen, at least in the short-term. Doomer predictions are notoriously in error. Immersing yourself in the doomer's world does you no good since you can't do anything about it anyway. Turn off you PC and quit thinking about it if it bothers you. Go out and take your dog for a walk. You will feel better and so will your dog.

In fact, be more like a dog. A dog doesn't spend his time brooding about the future. He is happy just to chow down on another meal and play catch with a ball. Be the dog for a while.

Its the same for me. I look on the woes of this world and I am at peace. Like you I fear nothing and I accept everything. I go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and always remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. I speak my truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. I take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. I nurture strength of spirit to shield myself in sudden misfortune. But I do not distress myself with dark imaginings. I know that I am a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; and that I have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.

--------------

Just kidding.

My main reaction is actually amusement. I can't believe the crazy things US US politicians do and say, and its the same or worse in the EU and elsewhere. The crazier it all gets the more I laugh at it. The war in Iraq ended and then it didn't. The EU welcomed a million illegal immigrants and then it didn't. Peak Oil has turned out to be not as bad as feared (so far) while global warming is turning out to be worse then expected (so far). The end of the world is turning out to be very entertaining indeed, so "Bring on the popcorn".

When you quote something like the Desiderata, you should note what it is and where it came from.

Most Republicans think it's something from the '60's, so hate it as hippie stuff, but it was actually written in 1927.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desiderata
"For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst and provide for it." - Patrick Henry

The level of injustice and wrong you endure is directly determined by how much you quietly submit to. Even to the point of extinction.

?????

Congrats on recognizing the form of the Desiderata---I assumed most people here would recognize it. I didn't think it was necessary to ID it because it is so well known---its like quoting "America the Beautiful" --- its a waste of time to say "From America the Beautiful, isn't it?

AND I didn't actually quote the desiderata ---- I slightly modified the Desiderata to make a joke.

Thats why immediately below my altered bit of text I wrote "JUST KIDDING"

----------

Re-Read my post and see if you understand the joke.

Get it now?

If not, let me know and I'll explain the joke to you.

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.....
Deteriorata! Deteriorata!

Go placidly
Amid the noise and waste.
And remember what comfort there may be
In owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons
Unless you are in need of sleep.
Ro-tate your tires.

Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself
And heed well their advice,
Even though they be turkeys.
Know what to kiss.....and when!

Consider that two wrongs never make a right
But that THREE.........do.
Wherever possible, put people on hold.
Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment
And despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer maintenance.

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Remember the Pueblo.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mu-ti-late.
Know yourself.
If you need help, call the FBI.
Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
Especially with those persons closest to you.
That lemon on your left, for instance.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love therefore;
It will stick to your face.
Gracefully surrender the things of youth:
The birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan
And let not the sands of time
Get in your lunch.
Hire people with hooks.
For a good time call 606-4311;
Ask for "Ken."
Take heart amid the deepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese.
And reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot
It could only be worse in Milwaukee.

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Therefore, make peace with your god
Whatever you conceive him to be---
Hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises and urban renewal
The world continues to deteriorate.
GIVE UP!

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Performed by National Lampoon on "National Lampoon Radio Dinner," a 1972 recording by Blue Thumb Records. Lyrics by Tony Hendra.
