Merry Christmas everyone!

Seasons greetings POers.

I mainly spent my time installing a heat recovery system for our wood stove exhaust flue. It's great (I've reduced the length of the stainless steel inner flue from six to 2.5m, massively reducing updraft and wood consumption, plus I'm getting lots of extra waste heat around the house from 2m of external piping for heat exchange) and no one's died of CO poisoning yet 8)

Merry Christmas. May love invade every heart and mind across the globe. Anything but the hate that is running rampant!
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

Nice one M, & theoretically possible, quantum physics & all that.

(Also an unusual fallback position with a surprising potency)

But isn't massive updraft needed to replace oxygen in the burn chamber? (I have my very first wood stove and am new to this.)

My stove has the normal entry system plus air entering above to burn the woodgas. It gets plenty of air as it is (I've also got an air entry system from outside the house). The problem with too much updraft is just that it burns the wood too fast and you lose most of the heat up the chimney. That would be fine for a thermal mass stove that only burns for an hour per day as it would recover the heat, but is less good for a stove that needs to be on all day with a normal flue that is too long.

Take care with Carbon Monoxide (CO) folks, a silent killer. Buy a Carbon Monoxide detector / alarm. They are not expensive and could save your life.

Gas

I'm getting one on Monday. I've also set the heat recovery temperature quite high so that by the time it starts sucking air out of my not-terribly-well-sealed firewalled section, the main chimney above has heated up sufficiently so that the suction for air circulation doesn't override the suction from above the firewall (where the flue opens out to the full chimney size). I've put about five inches of cement in there, but the chimney is made of hollowed out terra cotta brick, meaning that I'm going to have to properly seal the inside of the lower air recovery part at some point to avoid any micro-cracks causing problems.

Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day to all and stay dry GASMON; good luck with the situation over there ...
