The philosophical musings thread

Unread postby onlooker » Sun 20 Nov 2016, 18:36:59

Thought I would create a thread where posters can make whatever comments or observations they wish of an abstract philosophical nature.
I will start with this one. "The problems with humans is we still have paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions but godlike technology"
"We are mortal beings doomed to die

I was thinking today about our ability to compartmentalize the illogic of life in our brain, without going stark raving insane. Specifically, the people who sit in launch capsules buried deep underground or the people who sail below the oceans ready to unleash hell on millions of unsuspecting other people who they will never meet. But these same people have others that they love deeply, their children, who they will teach how to throw a ball or just enjoy watching them take their first step.

I'm not much of a philosopher, I kinda think reality is a dream constructed on the fly to help me guess where the next banana is going to fall. The rest of my ruminations are just practice

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

My philosophy is pretty much summed up in my signature for the last few years anyhow.

I should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, design a building, write, balance accounts, build a wall, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, pitch manure, program a computer, cook, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

That isn't to say I excel at all those things, but better a generalist who can accomplish something than a specialist that is handicapped by the need for multiple other specialists just to plan the simplest of tasks.

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Since my experiences with Ayahausca, I have delved into trying to find the nature of being, and the ultimate nature of the self. A vast subject, with no easy answers. This fellow who teaches philosophy in the UK is one of the many people I stumbled across, who is examining this very question in depth:

Actually, most drugs save lives.

People are bad when they use force, up to including death, restricting individuals from making their own choices in the matter.

You want to reduce drug use? Stop criminalizing them, and start educating.

Discovering and accepting our animal side is not much of a problem ,
Discovering and accepting our consciousness is way more tricky

I used to use the corollary, "I am therefor I think."

Or less lol Mankind is on a one-way trip to destruction. We bred and overpopulated the earth. End of Mankind's story. After this, just a few humans

Makes one think that intelligence is in fact a mal adaptive evolutionary trait

no problem there , as a biological creature we obey the same law as bacteria
.....expand to the full extend of the limits , a boom/ crash scenario is pretty much the usual pattern
this is life , deal with it !

as for consciousness , well ..I know nothing , but I suspect a lot .
