I don't think any of the claimed peak oils are fake news. More like a conspiracy theory grounded an improper understanding of resource economics, or perhaps no understanding of resource economics.
Think of it this way, if peak oil is indeed as important as people claim, we would have noticed it more when it happened. A trip to the local gas station provides all the proof necessary to Joe Sixpack when determining its relevance to him, and the world at large.
The even more interesting question is how much farther along on the sine wave oil production profile are we?
