Nostalgia

Unread postby MD » Tue 16 Jan 2018, 10:22:44

I was born in 1958, so this year I am sixty, and have had the most amazing ride!

I fear for my grand kids though, the third of which is in the chute, head down, and waiting for the water to fall. Third in nine months! When it rains, it pours?

I'm not really a doomer. Well, I was for a time ten years ago. Today I don't worry, because I am going to die soon. A year or two at most. Drop that subject.

So, I have lived through the most amazing time in human history! As a kid I climbed mountains, pitched tents in three feet of snow, swan across lakes, and canoed rivers for miles and miles. Today kids live in a different world. Virtual. Not sure what to make of it. It's both good and bad. I'm just left hoping that they experience a ride as fun as mine.

Similar thoughts MD. I’ve got you by a few, 67. But reasonable health so far, ignorance is bliss. I’ve noted before that I feel as though I’ve outlived my time on Earth, I no longer feel a part of the human experiment. I’m content to live on the boat, living an old dream.

Here is an interesting article on nostalgia.

And a bit on a related emotion “solistalgia”

Also 67, also nostalgic. Don't forget to keep coming back here where you are among friends.

I'm in the same age cohort, but rather then feeling nostalgic for the past I feel driven to travel as much as I can to seek out new experiences. I want to see everything everywhere before global warming results in massive economic dislocations around the globe.

here's a thread highjack: have you heard of "hallway sex"? That's when you've been married 30+ years and are reduced to saying "fuck you" to your spouse while passing in the hallway :-)

you know, a joke of the day thread might be fun. I don't think we've had one here before? If so, it died a long time ago.

and planty. I very much agree. I also am ready to head out into any adventure that comes along. A bit narcissistic of me, but what the hell, that's the human condition. That solar eclipse thing back in august was a prime example. Three days on the road, wasting money and time in order to land on a mountaintop in Tennessee all by myself for a two minute spectacle. It was worth every penny, to me.

I am nostalgic, sentimental, emotional, and philosophical. Life is a wondrous thing. "why are we here?" "what does it all mean?" "omg this is fun!" "what comes next?, I can't wait to see!" It really leads me to think that there must be a master planner. "God". It's the basic premise that life erupted, and the first on the scene wanted to share the experience... have friends. That's a "deep pool" discussion. i've had many runs at that. Not sure I care so much any more

currently making slow caramelized onions, finely chopped and in the covered pan on low. Thin sliced russet potatoes, also slow cooking on the griddle. After another twenty minutes, some fluffy scrambled eggs with cheese, carefully stirred in the hot pan. Some rye toast or cinnamon raisin.

anyone want some? :-D

I just went out for dinner with a 25 year old friend of mine who i had to tell right off about having a completely warped view of the society he's living in, based on an app called Tinder. He was making a bunch of quite disgusting generalisations about modern sexual relationships. I spent 10 minutes chewing on him about what a bunch of bull he had allowed his head to be filled with. This dude has no shortage of real world relationship opportunity, which he completely ignores, because he's become completely immersed in the whole app based relationship filter approach. Scary shit & not just because I'm getting old.

I'm only 30, but certainly miss listening to Tom T. Hall and Johnny Horton on cassette with my dad in his '87 F-150.

I was deliciously bad this morning. Authentic Portuguese Linguiça sausage, fried slowly. Eggs in butter. White toast with both melted butter and Peach preserves. Kona coffee.

It tastes so good after a week of healthy breakfasts. I get little satisfaction from fruit and oatmeal.

It's so easy to slip
It's so easy to fall
And let your memory drift
And do nothin' at all
All the love that you missed
All the people that you can't recall
Do they really exist at all

Well my whole world seems so cold today
All the magics's gone away
And our time together melts away
Like the sad melody I play

Well I don't want to drift forever
In the shadow of your leaving me
So I'll light another cigarette
And try to remember to forget

It's so easy to slip
It's so easy to fall
And let your memory drift
And do nothin' at all
All the love that you missed
All the people that you can't recall
Do they really exist at all

wonderful nostalgia.

Well the night that was high, we got into town
Was the night of the rain, that froze on the ground
Down the street I heard such a sorrowful tune
Comin' from the place they call the Spanish Moon

Well I stepped inside, and slipped by the door
While a dark girl sang, and played the guitar
There was hookers, and hustlers, they filled up the room
I heard about this place they call the Spanish Moon

There's whiskey, and bad cocaine
Poison get you just the same
And if that -- that don't -- kill you soon
The women will down at the Spanish Moon

Well I pawned my watch, and sold my ring
Just to hear that girl singing, yeah, yeah
I don't care who, you can wake up ruined
You can lose it all down at the Spanish Moon

There's whiskey, and bad cocaine
Poison get you just the same
And if that -- that don't -- kill you soon
The women will down at the Spanish Moon
