gps tracking

Unread postby MD » Thu 10 Jan 2019, 01:48:55

It was a simple search, or so I thought. I'm thinking about a "walkabout". Road trip adventure to check off some bucket list items. I figured it would be nice to give my bestie an easy way to follow my progress via GPS. I carry an iphone and an ipad, so should be easy, right?

A quick google/app search led me into a world of parents tracking teenagers, spouses hunting cheaters, paid apps promising all and giving (probably) nothing.

Damn. Is our world that fucked up? Yes... I think it is. Paranoia seems to be the cultural mindset. Makes me scared and a bit... paranoid. 8)

fear is fuel for a wild fire. can you smell the smoke? it's just waiting for another waft of wind

this should be easy. I just want my gf to be able to follow me as I travel. all I get in response from my queries are how to spy on someone. and they want money. my cell phone has gps. go ahead and spy on me! good lord fml

it's not like my life isn't already fully exposed to 1984. fuck it. they can't quite see me in the shower naked yet, but when they do? oh well... enjoy the view

one day, maybe soon, I will load up a backpack and march into the deep woods. Sit under a tree and wait for the bear. Old school. Old man, I am. Tired old man.

What are the other choices? Subject myself to medical care (which I do not need)? Sit here in my cul-de-sac cave and watch the world melt? Hold the hands of old people near death? (that I could do).

just don't know

Delorme has a couple of small handheld GPS devices that are small, connect to your iphone (essentially gives you imessage satellite connection) and allow for real-time tracking of your whereabouts. They also have emergency features that allow you to alert authorities if you are in trouble and one of them has loadable maps and allows for sending short text messages. Some place like Bass Pro probably has them. Very useful if you are contemplating being somewhere for any length of time where there is no cellular service. You have to pay the monthly satellite service fees but they seem reasonable (at least the last time I looked).
Now no guarantees the gov't isn't tracking your every move...but it's good to a have a reason for a tinfoil hat!

I like Delorme. I used their mapping programs for years for logistic route planning. Fuck the tinfoil hat. I'd rather just smile and wave at the sky watchers. Kind of like John Malkovitch in RED. Go ahead and watch! I wake up with a hard on every morning, and have to lean way over to piss. That's just life.

i'm getting geared up for a walkabout, American style. North on 95 to the end. West on 90 to the end. South on 5 till the end. Then across the middle. Probably will be my last "great adventure". Have no idea what's in store. Winter road trip.

And I don't see a problem with competitive businesses charging a fee for such data -- for the individual being tracked, or their property, as long as THEY initiate the tracking request. They also charge for real-time traffic data, because there is a market for that. As long as the service works and the customers are happy, what's the problem with a fee?

As far as the tracking you by others, it's a shame you can't opt out. Or that such data can't be used without a court order (for a legit criminal investigation, to look for a missing person, etc).

But yes, such tracking is commonplace. It's not just phones, rental cars, personal portable GPS systems, etc. When I search on "gps tracking of packages" or "gps tracking of shipping containers", there's a LOT of GPS tracking, for profit, going on.

OTOH, the under-30 set LIKES to be tracked and many constantly post their activities, selfies, location, etc. on social media. What could possibly go wrong? :?
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

odds are: nothing. life isn't a hollywood drama, with cliche plot lines, but the youngsters have been brainwashed into thinking it is. sad for them. noses in phones waiting to be carried off in a fantasy world, not realizing they already have.

Alternatively, if you have nothing to hide you lead an exceedingly dull life indeed!

I'm trying to interject a bit of humor here with a person who is having a crisis of sorts, in order to get him to open up about it. This is not about walking, it's about escaping an unpleasant situation.

Now MD doesn't have share what is but he is troubled about something.

Fair enough. The degree to which MD recognizes and internalizes the dysfunction he sees around him and his desire to do something about it actually is the exact way to avoid a crisis. He is showing symptoms of being awake. The real crisis are among those who are sleepwalking every day and are content with mediocrity.
